When
you join or donate to Partnership for Sustainable Communities, you will
help us undertake the
following:
- Work
to make
housing affordability a high priority in state and federal
policy formulation
around development and transportation--defining sustainability as
being about
more than green building and clustering development around transit,
but also to
include housing affordability as a key consideration.
- Educate
localities about inclusionary zoning, streamlining of
entitlement and design
review processes, and other prohousing land use policies.
- Advocate
for more
state and federal incentives for prohousing local policies, such as
linking availability
of transit funding for local governments to steps to encourage
affordable
housing development.
- Inform
policymakers about ways to promote economic opportunity within
easy access of
affordable housing and to adopt policies that recognize the combined
cost of
housing and transit.
In
California
and other states with statewide land use and planning issues on the
public
agenda, help promote the goal of sustainable development that
includes
inclusionary principles and addresses the need for affordable housing
close to
jobs.
Help housing
developers win entitlements at reasonable densities, reduce the
delay and cost
of the land use and design approval processes, and build public
support by
providing outreach tools, data, information, templates and advice on
organizing
supporters.
- Turn
environmental concerns from a negative to a positive for affordable
housing.
- Educate
local elected
officials, candidates, and land use staff about the benefits of
encouraging affordable
and mixed-income housing.
Educate
city
officials
and
opinion leaders about the value of compact,
higher-density land
use patterns and infill development, which will reduce greenhouse gas
emissions, help preserve and better utilize urban infrastructure, bring
down
the cost of housing, and reduce conflicts over greenfield development.
Conduct and
disseminate research on:
- Obstacles
to
infill development and ways to over come them.
- Impact
on
housing affordability of restrictive land use and zoning policies
and
protracted political fights over community acceptance.
- Social,
economic, and environmental benefits of affordable housing
development and
rehab for communities.
