New York’s Via Verde recently broke ground, with HUD
Secretary Shaun Donovan and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg in attendance.
The mixed-use project in
the South Bronx represents a new approach to
green urban development. The architects worked closely with the neighborhood to
incorporate community feedback on the project, including plenty of open space,
on the abandoned brownfield while at the same time, assuring that the project exceeds
LEED Gold standards.
A joint venture among the
city, Jonathan Rose Companies, and Phipps Housing Services, Via Verde (“Green Way”--a play
on words) will offer 150 units of low-income rental housing; 71 affordable
co-op units; a series of terraced gardens; and landscaped roofs.
Because the
community wanted the development to form a bridge between a housing tower and a
school yard, the development will gradually increase in height from two-story townhouses to a midrise
complex of duplexes to a 20-story high rise. Construction expected to provide almost a thousand jobs. Read more here.
