California -- The California Supreme Court put the brakes on implementation of AB 26/27, the controversial legislation that effectively eliminates state redevelopment agencies.

The California League of Cities and California Redevelopment Association filed suit challenging the constitutionality of AB 26/27. For more on the lawsuit see the related story here.

Taking up the issue, the Supreme Court stayed implementation of the legislation until it has a chance to decide on the constitutionality of the laws.

The Court hopes to rule on the case mid-January. Until then, one provision of AB 26 will go into effect, the provision barring redevelopment agencies from taking on new debt.
